Orthopaedic Physician Assistant

Area: Southeastern Spine Institute and local hospitals.

General Statement of Duties: The Physician Assistant practices in a supervised relationship with the supervising physician in order to maximize and extend the physician’s ability to manage patients from the new patient consultation, any O. R. responsibilities, and postop management.

Reporting/Supervisory Relationship: Supervising physician.

Typical Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion; manual and finger dexterity, eye and hand coordination, auditory and visual acuity are necessary. Requires standing for long periods of time. Must have the physical and mental stamina required for long or difficult and emergency calls. Must be able to assist in the transfer or positioning of patients of all sizes. Occasionally required to lift and carry items up to 50-pounds.

Typical Working Conditions: Job duties related to surgical requirements are primarily performed in the sterile operating room, requires exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids. Must observe universal safety precautions to avoid contraction of disease. May be exposed to germicidal agents and anesthetic gasses. Requires working under stressful conditions and working long regular hours. In addition, other job duties require hospital rounds, managing postop patients as well as seeing patients in the office in a clinical setting.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Function as a first assist in all surgical procedures.
  2. Maintain sterile field while using aseptic technique.
  3. Practice within limitations of scope of practice guidelines and the SC Board of Medical Examiners.
  4. Demonstrate physician assistant specified clinical skills.
  5. Intraoperative first assist behaviors may include handling tissue, providing exposure, using instruments, suturing and tying, and providing hemostasis.
  6. May perform pre and postoperative patient education.
  7. Review charts for pertinent data and insure surgery charts are available and complete for all surgeries.
  8. Assist and maintain a safe environment while promoting efficiency with surgical procedures.
  9. Will perform patient rounds as an extension of the supervising physician.
  10. Maintains patient confidentiality; complies with HIPPA and compliance guidelines established by the practice.
  11. Maintains detailed knowledge of practice management and other computer software as it relates to job functions.
  12. Will be present during clinic hours to perform initial patient consultations, history and physicals, and medical management for patients as a physician extender.
  13. Physician assistant will have call responsibilities, including any phone calls from the answering service.

Other Job Duties:

  1. The physician assistant will attend continuing medical education courses as needed or requested.
  2. Will attend all regular staff meetings.
  3. Attends annual CPR, OSHA and CLIA training programs.
  4. Reports any perceived hazard to their supervisor or OSHA Safety Officer upon discovery.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of all professional physician assistant standard of care.
  2. Knowledge or organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care.
  3. Skill in identifying problems and recommending solutions.
  4. Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  5. Must have basic computer skills and experience with practice management and word processing software.
  6. Must be able to perform multiple and diverse tasks simultaneously.
  7. Must have strong verbal and written communications skills.
  8. Must display a courteous, positive and helpful attitude to patients’ and their families, staff and physicians to include a pleasant speaking voice and demeanor.
  9. Must feel comfortable working in a team environment consisting of hospital staff and physicians, patients and outside vendors.
  10. Must be reliable and highly motivated.
  11. Must be able to accurately follow surgery center hospital procedures and protocols with minimum supervision.
  12. Must maintain a neat professional appearance.

Education: The P.A. must successfully complete an accredited physicians assistant program that meets all national and state requirements. The P.A. must also complete the NCCPA certification exam.

Experience: 1 year as a PA and orthopaedic experience preferred. BLS required and ALLS preferred.

License: SC Board of Medical Examiners.
