| Minimally Invasive Spine SurgeryThe METRX procedure is a minimally invasive surgery on the lumbar (low back) spine. This surgery requires a very small incision and allows the physician to remove only the portion of your disc that is pinching the spinal nerve root. How is the METRX performed? The physician will place a small incision in your lower back. An Endoscope will then be inserted; this use of the endoscope ensures that the incision is minimal. The physician will use your MRI or other diagnostic study to guide the surgery. Once the area of impingement has been located the surgeon will remove the ruptured portion of the disc along with any fragments which may have broken off from the main disc. The endoscope is then removed and the incision is closed. What can I expect after surgery? It is normal to have pain post operatively. There may be some leg pain or aching as your nerve(s) attempt to heal. Muscle spasms in your back or down your leg can also be common. Your physician will put you on appropriate medication to keep you as comfortable as possible after your surgery. Please call our office after you are released from the hospital to schedule a 10 -14 day appointment after your surgery.
